Brainspotting Therapy

Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach that was developed by David Grand in 2003. It is a powerful and innovative technique used to access and process deep-seated traumatic experiences and emotional distress that may be stored in the brain and body.

Brainspotting recognizes that the eyes are connected to various parts of the brain, including the amygdala, which is involved in processing emotions and trauma. By identifying specific eye positions, known as "brainspots," within a person's visual field, Brainspotting aims to locate and target areas of the brain and body where trauma-related information and sensations are held.

During a Brainspotting session, the therapist guides the client's attention to focus on a specific spot or point in their visual field that corresponds to the internal experience they are exploring. This may involve tracking eye movements or finding a fixed position that activates and intensifies the client's emotional or physical sensations. This can also be done with eyes closed.

By maintaining sustained attention on the identified brainspot, the client is encouraged to explore their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations that arise. This process combined with Somatic Therapies allows for the natural processing and release of unresolved trauma or distressing experiences, fostering healing and integration.

Brainspotting is often considered a neurobiological tool that taps into the brain's capacity for self-healing. It can be used to address a wide range of issues, including trauma, anxiety, phobias, performance enhancement, addiction, and unresolved emotional patterns. Brainspotting can be utilized as a stand-alone therapy or integrated with other therapeutic modalities.

One of the key strengths of Brainspotting is its ability to access and process trauma and emotional material that may be difficult to reach through traditional talk therapy alone. It bypasses the limitations of conscious awareness and engages the deeper layers of the brain and body, facilitating profound healing and transformation.
